QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. The willingness to work as a team member with a variety of individuals and take directions from supervisors.
  3. Ability to relate well to children, parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators.
  4. Ability to maintain complete confidentiality and professional discretion.
  5. Ability to implement floor activities with children and parents.
  6. Ability to take initiative and be a “self-starter”.
  7. Ability to manage time.
  8. Must have, or be able to obtain and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.
  9. Must have and maintain a dependable means of transportation.
  10. Ability to lift as required by job.

JOB GOAL:

The primary role of the Early Childhood Special Education Paraprofessional is to aid in the implementation of the Individual Education Program for the identified preschool child under the supervision of certified personnel. During the performance of duties assigned to an Early Childhood Special Education Paraprofessional, other staff members may share confidential information and/or make confidential information available to the paraprofessional. It is imperative that any information learned about children or families because of your special job must be kept confidential and not shared beyond requirements of the job.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Display knowledge of normal developmental milestones and how this relates to exceptional children (birth to school age).
  2. Under supervision, aid in the implementation of activities to help the child achieve short-term objectives.
  3. Be responsible for implementing activities and techniques needed by an individual child to meet his short-term objective.
  4. Be responsible for following weekly lesson activities.
  5. Be responsible for appropriate data collection necessary for accountability.
  6. Document articles, toys, and messages given to the child’s family.
  7. Be responsible for the physical safety of each child, while working with him or her.
  8. Assist in making of necessary materials and in preparation for activities for program implementation.
  9. Assist with storage and sterilization of instructional material.
  10. Provide oral and written feedback to appropriate individuals on the performance of the child.
  11. Familiarize themselves with information concerning the child’s strengths and weaknesses as well as those of the child’s family. Be aware of and support the family as they go through various stages of living with an exceptional child regardless of social economic status or value systems.
  12. Attend staff meetings and participate in in-services.
  13. Be a community spokesperson and/or resource for preschool development and special education, when appropriate.
  14. Assist in screenings as necessary.
  15. Maintain a log of activities as directed to meet local, state, and/or federal guidelines.
  16. Perform any other duties as directed.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  1. Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer, to see and read a computer screen and printed materials with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal office levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so others may understand clearly in the business environment, outdoors and on the telephone; and physical agility to reach overhead.
  2. Ability to move between schools, school buildings, office areas and multiple rooms.
  3. Ability to interact cooperatively with others.
